How to Calm Down an Anxious Dog With The Thundershirt Dog Anxiety Treatment Wrap

My five year old Miniature Pinscher/Schnauzer mix has pretty bad thunderstorm anxiety. He shivers, barks, and whines. It’s sad to see him like that! I was very skeptical, but willing to try the The Thundershirt Dog Anxiety Treatment WrapThundershirt Dog Anxiety Treatment Wrap after a friend of mine told me about it. She’s got a Lhasa apso with the same problem and she’s been getting good results. I’ve been having great results myself.

I don’t think it’s an instant and 100% remedy. However It has minimized my pooch’s anxiety during storms by about 80%. He’s still somewhat anxious, but he doesn’t shiver, bark, and whine as much as he used to, before I started putting the Thundershirt Dog Anxiety Treatment Wrap on him.

He will still pace some, but through the storm he just lays down on the floor and looks miserable until the storm is over. So I would say it’s a big improvement. You’ve got to make sure to get the right size for your dog, so it won’t be too tight, you don’t want to annoy your dog and make him uncomfortable.

You want to make it snug, not extra tight. I measured the deepest part of his chest to get the right size I didn’t go by his weight. My little pooper (That’s how I call him, when he annoys me) didn’t appreciate the shirt when I put it on him for the very first time, and he looked at me like I was nuts.

But he’s gotten used to it by now. I think he actually looks forward to having me put the shirt on him when it starts storming. We  have strong thunderstorms very often in the city where I live. Thundershirt Dog Anxiety Treatment Wrap has made the rainy and stormy season much easier to deal with and it looks like my buddy is a lot more comfortable thru it. I’m happy if he’s happy. The Thundershirt will help calm them down.

The Pros

It might sound like a lot of  hype! But this jacket really does calm an anxious dog. The dog may not become super confident but it really makes them a lot more calmed.

They come in all sizes: small, extra small extra, extra small, medium, large, extra large and extra, extra large.

It also comes in the original style and a sporty rugby style. They come in gray, black, navy blue and pink.

Easy to put on and take off, easy to create a snug, comfortable fit which is important for it to work effectively in treating noise anxiety, separation Anxiety in dogs and other Anxiety issues.

It looks good, strong fabric that resists shedding. Machine washable for when necessary and it lasts at least the life of the initial user. It’s got a great price, the price normally varies by style. About $39.95 for the original style and about $44.95 for the rugby style

The Cons

It doesn’t calm him down when people knock on the door, but it works for laud noises caused by thunderstorms. Bare in mind, it’s not going to fix all of your dog’s problems, there are some problems that might need more than the Thundershirt to fix, like professional dog training and some extra TLC.

I don’t recommend putting it on for the first time during a thunderstorm or any other anxiety triggering event like the fourth of July, fireworks. As with anything new you might introduce to your dog, you should let the pooch sniff it and get familiar with the scent, then you put it on and let him or her get used to feel of it, and encourage him with rewards and praise. Overall you should do this while the dog is already calm.

The Thundershirt Dog Anxiety Treatment Wrap, is not a miracle fix to all my dogs problems, but so far it’s helping him get through those ruff times a whole lot better than before. I would recommend it.  I have a really cool and very useful tool on this site, called the FREE, 90% off deal finder tool. Feel free to use it when you are ready to get the Thundershirt. I guarantee you will love this tool, I do!

  1. Try the original pressure wrap, the Anxiety Wrap designed for dogs – and cats by certified professional dog trainer, Susan Sharpe. In a recent clinical study performed by veterinarian Dr. Nicholas Dodman at the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine the Anxiety Wrap was found to be effective in 89% of Thunderstorm phobic dogs. I personally have found the Anxiety Wrap to be 100% effective in reducing anxiety in the dogs I have used the product on for the management of general and separation anxiety. I highly recommend the Anxiety Wrap as an adjunct in the treatment of canine anxiety, but recommend that users first consult a veterinarian to rule out medical causes of their dog’s anxiety and then a knowledgeable professional trainer with education and experience in behavior modification to develop an individualized behavior modification plan. More information about the Anxiety Wrap can be found on the company website:

  2. Just to set the record straight, if anyone deserves the credit for originating the use of pressure wraps on dogs and other animals, it is certainly Linda Tellington-Jones, founder of the TTouch Method. She has been advocating the use of these for literally decades. I personally have been using body wrapping techniques for many, many years, long before either the Anxiety Wrap or the Thundershirt were introduced. The main reasons I use, prefer, and recommend the Thundershirt vs. other body wraps: Thundershirt is the easiest to put on and adjust, has no cumbersome extra straps, and, in the vast majority of cases, eases anxieties, relaxes body tension, reduces arousal, etc.

The other thing I like is that Thundershirts are now so widely available at retail stores, veterinary offices, and direct from professional trainers, you can take your dog with you to try out which size is the best fit, which takes the guesswork out of determining sizes. Thundershirt is a very useful tool for me as a trainer and a dog owner and I only wish I would have had it 20 years ago.

I’m a strong believer that credit should be given to whoever deserves it and as you stated in your comment this person is Linda Tellington-Jones. It was easier for me to just order it online because to be honest with you I hate taking my dog to the vets office because of how scare and agitated he always gets, and it’s always been this way. Don’t get me wrong I take him to the vets office when it’s necessary check ups, vaccinations. Etc, etc. However, it doesn’t matter how many times he’s been to the vets office and how nice they’re always to him, he always gets this way. Therefore it was more convenient for me and him to order it online. After getting the Thundershirt and getting him adapted to it, his visits to the vet have gotten a lot more easier and bearable. It wasn’t hard for me to determine my dogs size at all, and get the right fit for him. Thank you.
